I’ve included some options below of various symbolic moments you could include in your ceremony. Take these as a guide, we can explore ideas that feel suitable for you. The best rituals within a ceremony are the ones that are weird and wonderful out of context but to your friends and family, they are just so YOU!

RING EXCHANGE

Traditional ring exchange where both parties share promises or vows and commit to their marriage with the giving and receiving of a ring which is placed on their left hand. It is said that the never ending circle of the ring represents never ending love.

UNITY CANDLE CEREMONY

At the beginning of the ceremony both parties light a tall taper candle which represent each of them as individuals. Later in the ceremony both parties use their taper candle to simultaneously light a bigger pillar candle. The joining of the flames representing the coming together of the two individuals which now cannot be parted.

HAND FASTING CEREMONY

There are various ways in which a handfasting ceremony can be conducted, the premise is that both parties join left hands, individual ribbons or a plaited handfasting chord are looped around the hands and a knot tied (this is where the phrase – the tying of the knot originates). If you would like to involve other people (children, family, bridal party) then they can each lay a ribbon individually, they could share hopes for your future at the same time. The colours of the ribbons can be chosen by meaning.

SAND CEREMONY

This is a lovely option for ceremonies in which you would like to include other people who have been important influences on your life. You start with an empty bottle and a series of individual bottles filled with coloured sands. Each individual comes forward and fills the empty bottle with a layer of their coloured sand (the sand colours can be chosen for their meaning). You are left with a bottle where you can see the colours of the individuals, but it would be impossible to completely separate them due to the grains being so small and intertwined, this represents that whilst we are all still individuals you can never completely remove the influence we have on each other.
